A Study on Activities and Performances of Family Planning Workers in Rural Areas

Abstract
In order to analyze the influence of Family Planning Workers on the Performance of the Family Planning Program in some Rural Areas of this country, survey were conducted in 12 townships in six counties for a one-week period from February 14 to 19, 1972 regarding the characteristics of the workers, characteristics of the Survey Areas, Target and Performance, number of Field Trip Days, and Activity Hours.
Through the analysis of the resultant data, the following data have been obtained:
1) The average age of the Family Planning workers was 34.5 years.
2) 66.7 per cent of the workers were high school graduates.
3) As for the qualification of the workers, 50.0 per cent were aid nurses, 25.0 per cent were nurses, and 25.0 per cent were unlicensed workers.
4) 50.0 per cent of the workers had longivity of employment for five years or more.
5) The average density of population in the survey areas was 166.3 persons/§´.
6) The average monthly number of Field Trip Days of the workers was 18.7 days.
7) The Family Planning Workers spent an average of 32 hours and 57 minutes for family planning activities each week.
8) Performance had postitive correlations with target by contraceptive method. It had postitive correlations with activity hours in case of Loop and contraceptive operations. However the number of Field Trip Days did not practically influence the Performance.
On the basis of the above conclusion, the following recommendations are made:
1) In order to improve the aptitude of Family Planning Workers, a definite education and training system should be established.
2) In order to avoid superficial field trip activities, the morale of Family Planning Workers should be boosted.
3) Family Planning Workers should not be given other duty than that required for fulfilment of the family planning program.
4) For the qualitative improvement of the family planning program, excessive concentration on the achievement of Target should be avoided.
